The Largs Viking Festival is an annual local festival celebrating a battle between Viking raiders and the Scottish defenders in the year 1263.
The local people of Largs decided to celebrate this great victory and the Largs Viking Festival was born. Founded in 1971, The Vikings are the oldest and largest Dark Age re-enactment society in the UK, and probably the world.
This year's festival was packed with new events for 2006 ensuring as always it was a huge success. The Festival is an annual event and is always extremely busy with a fantastic carnival atmosphere! With lots of activities going on throughout the day including the main procession through the streets of Largs down to the waterfront, Viking battles, fairground rides, face-painting, jumble sales, gymnastics displays, the Viking Village and much much more…
Once again this year's festival parade was headed by the fabulous Rockettes cheerleaders who lead the parade through the heart of Largs. "We were delighted when then were invited back this year; it's our 4th year at the Viking Festival and we just love it. The people of Largs make us feel really welcome" said squad veteran Claire Nimmo.
And no Scottish festival would be complete without a selection of pipe bands. This year's festival presented a group of the best bands around playing traditional tunes for everyone to enjoy.
"The Rockettes certainly add sparkle to our event, even when the sun isn't shining – we really enjoy having them involved with our event each year" said Grahame Ross, Director / Secretary, Largs Viking Festival.
