Edinburgh Rugby Sevens
Edinburgh Rugby Sevens

Edinburgh was the host to one of the most vibrant events of the summer, the Emirates Airlines Edinburgh Rugby Sevens at Murrayfield on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June.

Supporters of all ages need no encouragement to get into the renowned party spirit of sevens as the stadium was brought alive with carnival music from various bands from tribal drums fused with Scottish bagpipes, to steel and even samba bands.

The UK's top pro-sports dance team, the Scottish Rockettes, were on hand to entertain the crowd and the giant Sky Guys – (giant inflatable dancing men) danced along in the background! And, not forgetting the real sky guys who literally dropped-in for the event – the Golden Lions Scottish Infantry parachute team.

Some 16 international teams took to the main pitch at Murrayfield to compete in the final leg of the 2006/07 IRB Sevens World Series, treating spectators to two action-packed days of fast-flowing, skilful and dynamic rugby sevens.

To add to the overall event 1,132 players in 96 teams took part in a lively Festival of Rugby on the back pitches and a whole host of fun and exciting entertainment was on offer in and around the ground.

The action on the pitch, the fun in the stands and the activity from the Festival of Rugby on the back pitches was shown on the big screen inside the stadium bowl – so spectators didn't even have to leave their seat to take full advantage of the event's atmosphere. The big screens also acted as huge karaoke machines as fans (and also the Rockettes) took to the pitch to do some singing!

The whole weekend was drawn to a close in style on Sunday as Murrayfield witnessed a spectacular pyrotechnic display as the winner of the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s New Zealand lifted the Ned Haig Cup, and by doing so they edged past Fiji to regain the IRB Sevens World Series trophy.

Carole Anne, Dance Team Manager said "This was a fantastic weekend, full of fun and excitement – we were thrilled to be part of Scotland's first Sevens tournament!"
